I really wasn’t sure what to expect from “Black Thorn”. My first introduction to Flatfoot 56 was when I went to see a local band open for The Street Dogs a year or two ago. The show Flatfoot 56 put on, was by far the highlight of the night. Their stage presence and energy they brought to the venue was infectious. The place just exploded and was one of the better acts I’ve seen since being in Atlanta. I went home that night and checked out a few of their albums and I have to admit was disappointed. Fast Forward to February 2010 and I’m asked to review their newest album “Black Thorn” which is set to be release St. Patrick’s Day. Listening to this album brought me right back to that show. “Black Thorn” is filled to the rim with Celtic influenced, high intensity gang vocal laden, heavy hitting song after song. Not only are the songs powerful and addicting, they are also recorded & mixed to perfection. Each intricate musical piece of this band is perfectly combined to make the band sound like a whole unit rather than individuals playing music together. The term “All for one and one for all” is what comes to mind when I think of the unity this band’s sound has. There aren’t any bad songs to speak of on this album and of course there are a few songs I like more than others. Ultimately you can’t go wrong with any of them. My favorites are; “Smoke Blower” (for its integration of so many different tones and great lyrics), “Shiny Eyes”  (For its change of pace, slowed down acoustic sound mixed with male/female harmonic chorus), & Hourglass (What can I say, it’s just bad ass). Like I said just about all the songs are great and if you ever get a chance to see them live, you are bound to see one hell of a show.

This gravel voiced melodic punk band doesn’t sound like the stereo-typical introductory release. The songs tend to be upbeat and melodic with great harmonic back/gang vocals. The songs are similar in style, but differ enough in tempo, riffs, and cadence that you couldn’t confuse each song for the next like many melodic bands. This album is jam packed with fisting pumping sing along hits. Some of the highlight songs are “Rest in Peace”, “Rat Race”, “This Is The Day” to name a few. Don’t get me wrong, not every song is a blockbuster, there are two or three mediocre songs, but overall this is a pretty kick ass record and I’ve been rocking some of these songs on a daily basis. I’m excited to hear what else The Dwyers have to offer in the future.

Both bands bring to the table the same thing they always have, pure sugar coated chocolate covered pop punk. One of the best things done on this album is that each band did a cover of the others songs. This is something that used to happen quite a bit and seemed to be extinct until recently. A little thing like that really makes a 7” special and builds a musical bond like Punk Rock was meant to do. As much as I like The Prozacs & both the bands songs sound great, The McRackins really rule on this 7” (As I’m sure The Prozacs would agree). Fans of either band will not be disappointed by buying this record.

This album is eighteen songs of high octane chugging riffs and deep from the gut screaming. Don’t be mistaken it’s not screamo, it’s Hardcore with some deep, deep bellowing screaming vocals. The songs have a dark death metal sound combined with a touch of NYHC. Not my thing at all, but they do seem to pull it off pretty well. Lyrically they seem to be a pretty decent band, if you like that style of music. I just don’t and more than likely wouldn’t listen to this CD again.

Everything is overly simple, the singing is awkward and the bass lines really over-power the songs. Overall it sounds like a basement recording of a teenage beginner band playing some Ramones influenced songs to a couple of their friends. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but also doesn’t make for anything memorable. The female vocals tend to be somewhat monotone and generic & the male vocalist just seems off and should stick to back vocals. I wouldn’t pick this up unless it was free and even then would probably forget about it pretty quickly.

They remind me of some of the late 90’s Fat Wreck Chord bands such as; No Use For A Name, Pulley, or Pennywise. Face The Fax has heavier touch of heavy rock than I like, but I know others really enjoy.. I could bore you with a breakdown of each song, but I don’t have the attention span to force that upon myself or you.

This band is a prime example of  that thought process. I could go on about how they sound like this band or that band, or how they sound like an emo-ish bullshit opening act for Fall Out Boy. Anyway you put it, they’re just a band that makes my stomach churn and get that burning feeling of puke in my throat. Ultimately I really just can’t delete their mp3’s from my computer fast enough, for fear they may pop up on shuffle and burn my eardrums again. All you need to know is that if you read Punk Rock Review reviews on a regular basis, you will hate this.

I can’t even call The Tubesteaks they, I think it’s just some dude with his acoustic guitar, some heavy sexual frustration, one set of notes (that sounds to be the same from song to song) and computer microphone. Hey I love some stupid funny stuff like, The Meatmen, The Dwarves, etc..but this guy just isn’t witty or the least bit talented. Shit the songs titles don’t even have any imagination (Abortion is population control, Brown Eye Delight, Choke me while I masturbate, I’m gonna give your girlfriend AIDS, Terry smells like tuna, & of course, Finger my ass.) The songs are just bad and a waste of time to even comment on any further. Thanks for wasting my time The Tubesteaks, I hope your tube sock gave you Aids.

Oh if only a slick 1st impression could make up for the music that is on this beautiful record. Really it’s not that the music is badly done, it’s not the kind of music I listen to. The Cold Beat has more of an Indie/Alernative rock sound, while Movers & Shakers is more of a grassroots rock band. Both have some musical resemblance to a contemporary Replacements. Like a pulled together College Indie Rock sound. Not my thing at all, but I can hear where some folks might be into this kind of stuff.

New Real Disaster is an Italian female fronted Power Pop/Punk band with a laid back flowing style that leaves you humming their songs the rest of the day. The only reason you haven’t heard them is that they don’t have any distro deals in North America….yet (but if you want to help them out send them an email). The song writing is upper level good with tons of variation never a stale or dull moment in any of their songs. There are handfuls of solid bridges, break down, & hooks that are masterfully put together for an explosive sound. They’re aren’t many female fronted punk bands out there that have the sound and presents of New Real Disaster, so I can’t really say they sound like anyone else. The only negative I can find is that at times New Real Disaster’s Singer’s (Giusy Disaster) pronunciation of words is a little off, but it’s only noticeable in a few songs. This is an album that you should check out for yourself, it is well worth the purchase.
