They are the best kind of that great catchy, poppy, bittersweet kind of punk. They have a great feel of sincerity I don’t hear enough. They remind me of The Replacements or that Plimsoul’s song “a Million Miles Away” that was in the Nick Cage Valley Girl movie. If I were brooding about a girl or something and were to drive around at night and do something or another self-destructive I would be listening to The Creeps. The Creeps have the Ramones style buzzsaw rhythm guitar with reverby riffs that I have caught myself humming a couple different times today.

I’m sure everyone would be bouncing and singing along. It would be humid from everyone’s sweat but just smell like fun. It would be that kind of magic and energy that doesn’t happen in big cities.

Captain, We’re Sinking is kind of half melodic emo-core and half screamy pop punk, along the lines of Hot Water Music or Alkaline Trio. Their music is interesting and has a lot of changes in each song. Like there will be an upbeat sing a long “oh, oh,” part followed by a slow, pretty arpeggio bridge followed by a faster part with some mathy drumming. Sometimes the screaming vocals overpower the rest of the music but I like them. I would definitely want to go see them if they were playing a basement house party near me.

Pretty decent Hardcore from D.C. If you’re into Gorilla Biscuits and similar stuff then maybe they will be to your liking. I have to admit I don’t listen to hardcore much these days. Maybe when one turns thirty years old a switch gets flipped inside somewhere that when you listen to hardcore, instead of feeling excited energy, you feel agitated and reminded of heart attacks. The drums on this recording often bothered me; the sound was small and the beats were not quite where I wanted them to be. You know when, in a really tight hardcore band, all the instruments are charging at the same time like “chu-chu-chu-chu-chuuuuu” and you have to admire the split second timing? I wanted it to be more like that.

I can imagine this band getting a song played on alternative rock radio. I can’t stand alternative rock radio, but a lot of people love it. There wasn’t one song on the album I liked all the way through. There would be a part that sounded like Jawbreaker and then the chorus would come in and ruin it for me. The vocals at times sounded snarky and sarcastic, and I found it completely annoying. And those were the catchiest parts I remember after the album was over.

I would call them an alternative rock band. My first impression is that they are kind of similar to “at the drive in” with occasional Nu Metal style break downs and spotlighting the singer’s tender, sweet sounding vocals. The drums on this record are great, they really make this band. Disalto played warped tour last year and I can see them becoming a popular selling t-shirt at Hot Topic.

Fuck the girly looking MTV poster boys playing guitar led pop music to overgrown emos- there’s still meant to be PUNK in pop-PUNK.

Rant over.
Imagine New Found Glory instrumentally, but with gruffer than Fat Mike vocals, that’s pretty much Angleworm in a nutshell.
Except that really doesn’t do justice as to how fun and uplifting the four songs on this EP are.

‘Negative Surplus Value’ is the perfect pop-punk track, with it’s sing-a-long chorus and guitar riff you couldn’t help yourself jumping to.

The rest of this EP follows much the same suit, except each track has it’s own unique sound, making it perfect for a soundtrack to a summer beach party.

Like The Adicts? You’ll love Canada’s The Split Up’s then.
Hate poppy, old-school punk? You’re wasting your time reading this.

Right, now the losers with their crap taste have gone:
Opening track ‘Action Man’ couldn’t sound any more like Monkey and his boys, with it’s distorted guitars and addictive chorus, which, obviously, ain’t a bad thing.

‘No Future’ (Sex Pistols reference- told you they’re old school) is a catchy number, and has a little bit of a ska-y tinge to it’s verse riff. There’s another hooky chorus too, making it the perfect example of their in your face, snotty vocals, and cheesy cheerful riffs.

‘Televisual’ and ‘Oh Tricia’ are much like the tracks before them, style and quality wise, but have their own individual sounds, proving this band’s talent for happy, radio-friendly punk rock, with heavy UK 80s punk influences.
It’s just a shame there’s only four songs on this self-titled EP.

It’s straight into the typical punk rock with Belgium’s Rejected Bastards.

This EP is opened with ‘Chupacabra’, a 2 minute instrumental track, an odd start to a punk album. Track two, Understand’, is half instrumental, half proper song, but there is more signing from track 3 onwards.

All the tracks are only 2 minutes long (if that), and most are over half just instrumental. They give the impression they’re good at writing ‘cool’ riffs, but not very good at thinking of lyrics.

On their myspace, they mention Rancid, Operation Ivy and Left Alone as influences, and that’s certainly clear from this record.

Their music will sound better live, rather than on CD, when you can get drunk and dance to it, and not care about the lack of singing. They have a good sound, even if it is very typical of this generation’s punk.

It would be nice to see a little bit of individuality though- after all, isn’t that what punks supposed to be about?

The band is from the Netherlands, but Major League Punkrock could easily pass for a Californian soundtrack to the summer.

With some tracks sounding like perfect pop-punk (track 2 ‘You & I’) and some with a more melodic hardcore punk feel (‘Who’s Side Are You On’), there’s plenty of diversity on this record, showing Sellfish are some very talented lads.

They’ve already supported No Use For A Name and Less Than Jake, so if they keep releasing material as good as this, you can most definitely expect big things of these young(ish) upstarts.

If you like your punk rock fast, energetic, danceable and American-sounding, Sellfish should be the next band you check out.
