The Varsity Weirdos – “Can’t Go Home” (It’s Alive Records) The coolest thing about this album is that not only do you get the twelve songs from “Can’t Go Home”, but you also get a second, ten song disc with the songs from their 3 prior It’s Alive Records 7” records (Fly me up to the moon”, “High School teen party”, & the wedding split EP they did with the Steinways.)
The Varsity Weirdos are a high energy Power Pop/Pop Punk band with a similarity in sound to a combination of Pinhead Gunpowder mixed with The Briefs and then turn piggy back across California with F.Y.P. The one element that really stands out to me in “Can’t Go Home” is the great drumming! There aren’t any spectacular Phil Collins drum solos or anything, the drumming is just crisp & precise and made me tap along as I listened.
Oh and guess where they’re from? Fucking Canada!
If you’re a fan of bands such as; Fear Of Lipstick, Be My Doppelganger, Steinways,
Barrakuda McMurder, or The Peabodys you are bound to enjoy this 22 song treat.
