Police & Thieves – “Amor Y Guerra” (Youngblood Records) – Police & Thieves are my favorite straight edge band of the 21st century. They have a strong pumping beat with tons of breakdowns, chugging riffs and amazing vocals. Each song possesses a powerful blast of emotional lyrics that you can easily follow and feel the emotion of the singer; Carlos Izurieta. The best comparison I can come up with to illustrate Police & Thieves sound is a mix of Minor Threat, Early Fugazi, & Kid Dynamite. It shouldn’t be surprising with the Minor Threat & Fugazi comparison that these guys come from the birthplace of Straight Edge Hardcore, Washington DC. You can hear the influence of the DC punk scene, but at the same time you also hear that they are creating their own sound and not trying to imitate or mimic bands from the scene. Based upon the great stuff that Police & Thieves is putting out the DC punk scene is in good hands for many years to come.
