The CD
At first I thought the “Let Them Know” compilation CD was fantastic, but upon the second listen really only liked about 50% of the songs on the CD. The CD is a mix of old and newer bands covering songs from BYO released albums. The stand out songs are;
Off With Their Heads – “Headlights…ditch!” (I say the best of the bunch)
Bouncing Souls – “Young ’til I die”
Dropkick Murphys – “Fight To Unite”
The Briefs – “Who Is Who”
NOFX – “No More Lies”
Ch3 – “Scratches & Needles”
These aren’t the only good songs, just the best of the best. I was really surprised that not only was Pennywise included on this comp, but their songs weren’t even that bad. Unfortunately, the personally most disappointing song on this compilation is from one of my all time favorite bands, 7 Seconds. They do a country-western sounding cover of, Youth Brigade’s more popular songs “Sink With California”. The song was such a good song originally and 7 Seconds was such an amazingly energetic and powerful band that I was expecting to have a musical orgasm, rather than musical blue balls.
Ok, like I said after the 2nd listen I only liked about ½ of the songs, but after watching the DVD I had a better appreciation for the full CD. The compilations, just like the BYO records themselves is a melting pot of different styles, backgrounds, and influences that combine represent many of the punk sub-genres to unite punk rock from every angle. This compilation is a prime example of Better Youth Organization’s aim to promote punk and other alternative youth cultures in a positive light from 1982 through today. The “Let Them Know” box set is a must have for any punk music enthusiest packed with a DVD, CD, and collectible double vinyl album.
