The Gozerians – “Demo” 3.5/5- Listening to The Gozerians 2009 debut , is like cupping your ear against the garage door of their practice space. The vocal style isn’t fully formed here, nor is the lyrical agenda, but the building blocks are significant and affecting, bigger than piles of collapsed cathedrals. Snotty punk crumbled into accelerated, anthemic Bad Religion based skatecore. The subtle “Hey Psycho” opens the demo; with a nice foil for the youthful anger in the vocal and its crackling lead guitar riff, a sound and tone that can only become more refined and powerful with consecutive outings. “Welcome Back Jesus” is another highlight, with its tense, urgent opening instrumental section and a sarcastic caricature of the money-grubbing religions, who assure that donations will be used to fund the Armageddon , ban questionable books, and contribute to many other Godly services.
