The Bricktops – “Self Titled”- 4/5 – Kevin G. from The Bricktops called me and said this album was what he considered the best Bricktops release to date. Kevin explained to me that during The Bricktops last tour some shit went down between the members of the band and he was now the only current member of The Bricktops. With the break-up of the most recent Bricktops line up Kevin did some soul searching and went on to record, master, & produce this album in a three day span. For this album he put everything he has emotionally and musically and left it all in this album exposed to the world. He plays all of the instruments, does all of the vocals, (and based upon his words), wouldn’t have it any other way.

This 13 song solo DIY album sounds anything but DIY or solo. Musically there are a few different styles and influences peppered throughout the album. There are a few Screeching Weasel quality songs with some of the break downs and melodies (ie.. “track ”, “The Only Time”, “Stupid Little Things”). There’s a Queers style combined with a Screeching Weasel sounding riff in “Wait”. Not that The Bricktops are a copycat band, they definitely have their own sound as heard in songs such as “Pearl Ankle Bracelet”, “The Rail” and “Remember You”. Lyrically some of the songs are awkwardly worded (funny, but awkward), ( ie..”Pearl Ankle Bracelet”. “The Only Time”, ) and a few of the songs sound similar to some previous Bricktops songs, so they didn’t peak my interest to the highest level possible. Overall a great album that has some seriously catchy songs mixed in with a few fillers. A must have for fans of bands such as, Screeching Weasel and Squirtgun.
