The BeatUps – “Destroying The Peace” – I was explaining to someone a few weeks ago that when I do reviews I try to look at each album based upon the bands previous releases and their overall “experience” By that I mean when I review bands like The Queers or Parasites I put their releases at a different level than say a band sending me a DIY CD-R demo.
What does that have to do with The Beatups “Destroying The Peace”, you ask? I just want to explain how I would give this poor quality recorded album a similar score as I would a perfectly recorded album. I expect the quality of an album released by a label to have a high quality, while I take a poor quality recording from a DIY release with a grain of salt. Now that we have that out of the way.
“Destroying The Peace” is a ten song (20.3 minute) album recorded with a low sound quality that requires the album to be played at a high volume. Otherwise, you might miss out on a catchy, angst ridden fun album. The format is nothing you haven’t heard before, the songs are just better than most demos. The song writing and lyrics are filled with pissed off whoa E oh’s, power chords and driving beats. The great thing about this album is that there really isn’t any filler songs and there is a nice cover of “Earth Angel”. My favorite songs on this album are “Earth Angel”, “Bitch” (which is so pissed off, but filled with great hooks, you can’t help but love it) & “Beer fixes everything”. If this album was given proper recording, mastering, and release this album could be a possible top 10 of 2009 or at least a nod for new comer of the year.
