14 October 2008
For Immediate Release

PASTEPUNK.COM - Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary Today!
-------------------------------------------------------

* Commemorates occasion with coffee mugs and a Free MP3 Compilation from the BEARTRAP PR roster!
* 25 new, unreleased and rare songs from De La Hoya, Jena Berlin, Look Mexico, Pomegranates, Scream Hello, Nakatomi Plaza, Broadway Calls, Jumpercable, La Dispute, more!

-------------------------------------------------------
When I started Pastepunk during my first year of college, the plan was to write reviews of local shows and CDs that I had owned. There were no other goals and no big ambitions. The word "blog" had yet to be coined and the MP3 will still an innocent technological breakthrough. I never thought that my hobby would become such a substantial part of my life for the next 10 years. In that time period, we have seen the internet turn the independent music world upside down, and have been there to document the fruits and spoils along the way. - Jordan Baker, founder of Pastepunk.com

In punk rock, stating that you've been around for a decade is essentially admitting that you're an ancient vessel amidst a sea of doe-eyed, baby-faced, sometimes-talented (but often not) newbies who have barely tested the chilly DIY waters before sailing for warmer shores. Not to say that crusty old people rule, but there are certainly a handful that possess a nugget or two of wisdom and should be looked upon with reverence and admiration.

Such is the case with well-respected, often-imitated-but-never-duplicated webzine PASTEPUNK.COM.

Ten years ago to the day, Jordan Baker created the site as an outlet against boredom and vapidity of dorm room life. And while diligently sticking it out for so long is impressive, all this talk about who has the most notches on their studded punk rock belt or more indie cred means nothing unless you're contributing something relevant and interesting...and more importantly, doing it with passion and unshakable dedication. Jordan was one of the first people with whom I ever worked when I entered the fray almost nine years ago; I can state without hesitation that he and Pastepunk measure up to those qualifications.

With an archive of more than 10,000 news posts, 3000 album reviews and 300 interviews from bands such as Bad Religion, Rise Against, Thrice, Dropkick Murphys, H20, Less Than Jake, Bane, Set Your Goals, Strike Anywhere, Modern Life Is War, Against Me!, Crime In Stereo, Paint It Black, Thursday and AFI, Pastepunk's quality of content ranks up there with the best. What's more is that Jordan and his staff not only entertain on a daily basis, they do so with thought-provoking commentary and discerning tastes. In the words of the site's creator:

As a teen, I spent countless hours reading MRR, Punk Planet and Flipside, obsessing over music reviews and searching for a consistent voice of recommendation. I have tried to be that source with Pastepunk, relishing the role of being a filter in a world where the number of bands is simply overwhelming. It hasn't always been easy, but the relentless, addictive search to discover the next great hardcore, punk, metal or indie band is a desire that runs through my bones. I've always said that I'll keep doing Pastepunk until it isn't fun anymore and it means the world to me that we're still here.

To mark the occasion, Jordan and I have gathered 25 songs from BEARTRAP bands, creating the Pastepunk 10th Anniversary MP3 Compilation. It includes a number of previously unreleased songs, rare and live material, demo recordings for upcoming releases and several exclusive tracks recorded specifically for the comp. All 25 MP3s are completely free, but only available for the next month - until November 16th. For more information, go here, or directly download a zip file (including cover art and detailed information about every song) here.

And by all means, feel free to pass around the link or post it on your website!

The company, through its Vinyl Collective store, is helping out once again, handling order fulfillment for the limited edition Pastepunk Coffee Mugs. There are only 144 of these bad boys available, so grab yours here!

In conclusion, I'd like to to thank Pastepunk.com for 10 very memorable years and for giving all the Beartrap bands a chance to be part of this anniversary commemoration.

Pastepunk would also like to add, "thanks to all of the bands, record labels and management and PR firms that keep us well-stocked with new music and information, and our advertising partners as well. Without your support, we would probably have a lot more photos of cute babies chewing on stuffed animals."

Three years since the release of An Electric Trace, Canadian indie quintet Sylvie is brimming with anticipation to present their new full-length Trees and Shade are Our Only Fences to the world. The album will be released in Canada October 21st, 2008 through Smallman Records.

Recorded and produced by the legendary J. Robbins (Against Me, Jets to Brazil, Jawbreaker) in Baltimore, MD, Trees and Shade are Our Only Fences exceeds expectations, succinctly balancing songs that are musically complex and persuasively melodic. Noticeably more focused, Sylvie’s gorgeous arrangements have a more finely tuned sense of precision. The addition of Erin Passmore on keyboards and vocals results in a welcomed new layer of pop happiness and stunning group harmonies.

Lyrically the album exudes a sense of cautious hope for the future through songs about environmental fears, war, heartbreak and the passing of time. Lead singer Joel Passmore explains,

“The lyrics on this album tell more stories; they reflect the reasons we have to open our mouths, not just filler. In some ways they have a more somber tone, but in other cases songs talk about first loves and coming home. There is a bit of trepidation about the future at times, but I think it’s balanced with a light heartedness in the music. I guess it reflects our hopes as well.”

Formed in Regina, SK in 1999, Sylvie debuted with their first full-length album I Wish I Was Driving in 2003, garnering the band a nomination for outstanding independent album of the year at the WCMAs. An Electric Trace was released in 2005 through Smallman Records. Sylvie has played with Minus the Bear, Pony Up, Hot Hot Heat, Controller Controller, Death From Above 1979, Wintersleep, and Small Sins, and has showcased at CMJ, NXNE, CMW and SXSW. In 2006 Sylvie won the CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award, which was presented to the band during a live CBC recording at NXNE.

Sylvie, an absolutely breathtaking rock band …
~Dose

A tidy little album of post-punk rock full of maturity, aggression and beauty.
NNNN
~Now Magazine

Frankly, no one in Canadian music these days makes a sound like this. Sylvie did, with synthesised keyboard loops and teasing washes of guitar squall over the driving beats from that amazing rhythm section. Arenas, cold and silent as tombs, await their crazed sound.

THE REVIVAL TOUR KICKS OFF THIS MONTH FEATURING CHUCK RAGAN (Hot Water Music), TIM BARRY (Avail) & BEN NICHOLS (Lucero)

Los Angeles, CA - September 8, 2008 - In a match made in folk-punk heaven, Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan, Avail's Tim Barry and Lucero's Ben Nichols will embark on The Revival Tour this month, a series of shows that will see all three artists playing solo sets as well as performing on each others material. There will also be a number of guests joining shorter legs of the tour including Tom Gabel of Against Me!, Jesse Malin, Kevin Seconds from 7 Seconds, Jon Snograss from Drag The River, Sundowner, Austin Lucas & Frank Turner.

"All of the tours that I've done since I've been doing this solo stuff have in some way or the other ended up with a bunch of friends onstage by the end of the night," Ragan explains, adding that each performer will be joined by a backing band that will change based on geography and include many of their peers and previous tour mates. "I've always loved seeing that and now I'm absolutely loving creating something like that with good friends who think and believe along the same lines."

The tour will mark Ragan's final run in support of last year's solo debut Feast Or Famine (SideOneDummy), after which he'll begin pre-production on his next album for SideOneDummy. Barry is touring in support of his own folk debut, Rivanna Junction. Although the two musicians met in the nineties while fronting two of the most influential DIY punk bands of the era, in recent years both songwriters have begun to explore folk and bluegrass compositions, making this tour a perfect pairing of ideologies and instrumentation.

Nichols entered the picture when him and Ragan recently toured in January, but it wasn't until this year's SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, that the plan was solidified. "We were both doing our own thing and weren't there in conjunction, but ended up sitting down for some drinks after one of the long days," Ragan explains. "We agreed on a time, shook hands and kept on drinking." While the tour will feature individual sets from each artist, it will be more reminiscent of the folk tradition of involving multiple artist collaborations-and each performer will have guests coming on and off stage, including the three primary songwriters who plan to hunkered down in Barry's Richmond, Virginia backyard this summer to learn each other's respective tracks.

In response to the email message you sent me, please show me where in the review (in which I was asked by this band to complete) that there is something so biased it can be deemed slanderous. Please show me where the review that was completed is any different from a Movie Review, a Broadway Review, or even a Food Critics Review.

Had you simple asked me to remove your review I would have thought it was hilarious case of sour grapes, but would have no problem removing the review. However, once you attempted to strong arm & intimidate me with threats of legal action to remove my opinion from my website, (which again the band asked of me), then I must firmly stand my ground and stand up for my rights as tax paying citizen of the United States.

It is within my (as any other member of the united states) constitutional right to voice my opinion. If you want to take me to court in regard to a 1st amendment right of freedom of press, I am sure that there are plenty of lawyers who will stand firm on my rights and do so pro bono.

Sorry, I haven't updated lately, I forgot the password. We have some dumb fuck stalker who tries to break into all of our accounts, so I have to change the passwords just in case. He did get into one of our myspace pages a while back (Right passoword, "Ramones123"), so I changed all the passwords to the website stuff and had a senior moment.

Anyway, we've been getting a lot of great music lately, so be on the prowl for some pretty good reviews. Unforunately, we get a lot of garbage and when I give my honest opinion we get some pretty funny hate mail. I was thinking of creating a page souly dedicated to it, but Mrs. Taint reminded me that we'll just get a lot of fake hate mail and it will just take a way from the fun. So instead, I decided to post random hate mail (only the good stuff) as we get it on this blog. So come back often for some great hate and occasional responses by me.

So we'll start with the most recent (I'll post my reply and the reply to my reply at a later date, it's pretty funny).
In regard to the recent review of Geniune Imitations
http://punkrockreview.org/blog1/2008/02/genuine_imitations_self_titled.html
Hey, please remove that review from your site.
We pay attention to those and that sounds
like a rather biased review. It is so biased
that it is slander for the label and the band.
You can post this letter if you want, but your
review for the band needs to be taken down.
The fact that we're releasing a publically
retail album and the fact that GI is a band
not a company, you playing the role of
the company and with your extensive
catalog of other bands and propaganda
you are playing the role of a corporation
You are putting not only yourself, but your
company in jeopardy for the slander in
the review.

Either take it down, or you will need to
be speaking to my attorney in Los Angeles.

The fact it is a review is one thing, but being
biased and further damaging the band's reputation
and then posting it on the page. Is unacceptable.
We will take you to court regarding this issue
if it's not dealt with right away

We know who runs this site and have ways
that would be very easy to be in contact with
that person

there are also regulations of what you can and can't put on your site or the internet.
Take care of this plz.

Punk Rock Review 2007 Top10 Releases
For the last couple of weeks I've been thinking about putting out a Top 10 of 2007 list. I've been seeing them popping up everywhere, just as I do every year at this time. I've seen lists from a bunch of the Fat Wreck Chords bands, Ben Weasel, and numerous other people on the PPMB, but I just can't really come up with a list. I realized that I am probably over thinking it, but many of these best of typically give an unfair (unintentional I'm sure) bias to recent releases. They're fresh in your mind, still "new" and crisp with excitement and the releases from last January at this point are worn in and for the most part probably not as in the forefront of your thoughts.

Sorry for the lack of updates and news lately, we've been swamped with all kinds of cool stuff.

1st off we made our first donation from the "Barfights & Brokenhearts" compilation to Haven House. The donation was $250 so far and we will continue to donate for as long as the CD is being purchased. Thanks to everyone who bought this CD and we hope you like it as much as we do. Also thanks to all the bands and people who donated songs & efforts to make this happen.

2nd - We are excited to announce that we are joining forces with our friends at Jailhouse Records (www.jailhouse-records.com ) and co-sponsoring the upcoming Jailhouse Records tour which includes bands such as, Moral Crux, Teenage Rehab, The New Threat, Our Time, and a few others) Stop by www.jailhouse-records.com to get the full tour stops & dates.

3rd - As many of you are aware Jonny Taint has started writing reviews (along with Punk Rock Review) for a Great Website called Mohawk Radio (www.mohawkradio.com) . The website is similar to Myspace (adding friends, bands, etc..), but is aimed towards the punk rock community. They are currently running a contest to win an IPOD to the first person or band to get to 1000 friends. The website is a work in progress and has been improving its functions on a weekly basis. If you're in a band sign your band up its great exposure to people who are into the music you play and everyone else should create a profile and be part of a much cooler alternative to Myspace or Facebook (All Punk & No Spam).

4th - We've been receiving TONS of CD, records, MP3's to review, so we asked one of our friends to assist with some guest reviews. He's a good guy who plays bass in a Canadian Pop Punk band. Hopefully he'll stop drinking, watching Hockey, and growing facial hair long enough to get us the reviews in time for the next launch 11/19/07.

5th - Finally we want to thank DNA Energy drinks (www.dnaenergydrink.com )for sending us a ton their drinks. If you unaware of DNA they are a Florida based energy drink company, that's made by people and sponsors people of an alternative lifestyle. What does that mean? It means that they sponsor a skate team, Motocross riders, Wakeboarders, Tattoo artist, and a punk band (The New Threat).
DNA energy drinks are really good too. They don't have the normal chemical energy drink taste either. The Citrus tastes just like Sunkist Orange soda and the Lemon/Lime tastes like Mountain Dew. We have a few banners on our site and recommend checking them out.

So as you can see we've been busy, but never too busy to review great music. If you would like us to review your Vinyl, CD, or MP3, contact Jonny Taint (jonnytaint@punkrockreview.org )to get the address (email or physical) to send your music.

Have you ever had one of those ideas's that seem really good at first, but the more you work towards it the more you question the initial idea?

The other day I had one of those (what seemed like) good ideas. I read a posting from Mohawkradio.com that said they had a member of their page that was on deathrow and wanted people opinions. I responded and told them I thought they should let the guy stay on and should even consider having a daily/weekly/ or monthly blog that he wrote. I figured it would be good for exposure and keep people coming back.

So I figure I could look into it a little more and possible try it on this website (PunkRockReview.org). I was thinking that "Steve" regardless of if I felt he was innocent or guilty could write about the daily life and experiences that he has in prison. I love documentaries about prison and the whole psychology around it. I've always been so interested in the minds of criminals and psychopaths (I guess that's why they gravitate towards me) that I thought this would be such an interesting idea.

    I emailed a message to the person with a general inquiry if they would be interested. The person who responded explained that they were not the person "Steve" who is on deathrow, rather a person who writes and communicates to him. Which made a lot of sense because; I did think it was pretty weird for a person on deathrow to have full internet access. The person who contacted me "D" thought it sounded like an interesting idea and said they would write to "Steve" about it. Also sending me a written intro to "Steve" so I could understand how "Steve" got to where he is. This is what I received;

Use this if you like, or you can wait and see what Steve sends himself. D.

Beware: This Could Happen To You

Have you ever been in a situation where everything spins out of control? Have you been there, watching events move by, unable to find any kind of break, screaming "STOP!" at the top of your lungs... Yet nothing slows, nothing stops... and your life is taken completely out of your hands, flipped upside down, and kept dangled in front of you, just out of reach? Imagine...

You're sitting there at a vegetarian kiosk in northern California. You've spent the last several weeks squatting, hitchhiking, protesting, and kicking it with some good, radical, free-thinking people. You're taking a small break, heading down to San Francisco to see what's up with the city life before getting back into the forest to continue the fight against the logging industry. An old friend is there, and you reminisce about some old people in an old place.
Then, all of a sudden, you're approached by a police officer. They know you name and it unnerves you, so you give them a false one. You're searched, and they check out your tattoos. The three roses and vibrant green vines trailing down your arm gives up the game. You're placed in handcuffs, driven to a gulag, and subjected to various indignities before being locked into a small concrete box with nothing but a steel slab attached to the wall and a busted toilet.

Despite the various colored activities of your past, this is your first time in a jail cell. You're cold; you're confused, you're afraid. You've been using some pretty strong mind-altering substances for quite a while now and you're not really sure what's happening - if any of this is even real. And no one is telling you why you're even there.
After a while you adjust, a bit dazed when they finally tell you what they think you did. They tell you that you killed a couple of friends. They're going to seek the death penalty. They say that it happened in Texas, so they're gonna ship you there. You have to wait because some psychopath just took out the World Trade Center.

You know you've never killed anyone in Texas, but it doesn't seem to matter. You're shipped back like human cattle, trussed up and herded through the airport by a phalanx of soldiers. You're still pretty much in shock, by this pretty callous handling of your LIFE. What can you do? You go to stand trial, forced to put your trust into a system you've been told all along works. You KNOW it doesn't, but this doesn't matter either. You have no choice. You're a bum. Broke. No one to turn to. You're stuck with legal representation who aren't paid enough to care about you or your case. They barely work on it al all. No investigation, they barely do anything with the witnesses on the stand.
So it's really no surprise... or at least it shouldn't be... when eventually you're convicted. More "evidence" is presented by the state. You're a social miscreant (anarchist). You have no redeeming qualities. Your attorneys call NO witnesses to refute this. Twelve of your "peers" deem you unfit to live, and these people you've never met before sentence you to death.

Afterwards you are transferred to prison to wait for the axe to finally fall. Not a normal prison, a control unit. Super-Segregation. You're placed into solitary confinement, isolated from the rest of humanity for the rest of your life. You are still in shock. The situation is hard to grasp and you haven't quite registered it yet.
And then you do.

You've spent the last several months degraded, harassed, oppressed, provoked, trampled upon... Life becomes 22 hours in a concrete tomb. The bite of the handcuffs every time you're allowed out of it. Meals unfit for human consumption. The glass that will eternally separate you from your loved ones. They've taken most everything. They want what's left: your humanity. Then your life.
And in the end, you are given two choices: you can sit on your bunk and accept it. Or you can fight back with everything you have.

Imagine that. Try to put yourself there. What would you do?
That's what's happened to my life. What do I do?
I fight.

But I just don't fight for myself. I fight, because I know it's wrong. I fight because it's happening to me; and because it shouldn't happen to anybody.

It could happen to you.

Sorry for the lack of updates to the blog, we've been pretty busy putting together the compilation that's released 09/21/07. If you've never done it before, WOW is it an experience. First we had to get all the releases from the bands and with 27 different bands that can be nerve racking. Then there the cover art and deciding all the other tech stuff. Anyway, it's all done and we've started filling a bunch of pre-orders. All the songs will be available for download through www.downloadpunk.com by the release date we hope. It seems that they decided to change their server and I still need to upload a few of the songs. Once their server is back up we'll get the songs on and you'll be free to download all the tracks for $2.99. ***Also be on the lookout for the upcoming tour with Moral Crux & Teenage Rehab. Jailhouse! Records has asked us to co-sponsor this tour and we're excited to team forces with the great people of Jailhouse! Records to bring you these bands.

Enough self promotion. It seems that there's a lot of buzz around The Bricktops new album "Stay Home" that's being released 09/27/07. We did a review of it recently and I can't stop listening to it. I keep getting the feeling that in 10 years we'll all look back and be talking about this album as the launching pad for a long successful punk rock journey. Also coming soon is a new pop punk compilation from Diner Junkie Records that is full of great well known bands. It sounds like it's going to be awesome!

You know what makes my day?
It's when I come across people that understand what my intentions are writing reviews. People who can read a review, be entertained, but also understand that I am giving my TRUE opinion of the music I've reviewed. I have been told by a few people that whether they agree with me or not, they know that I am not going to sugar coat my feelings towards a band regardless how established or unknown they are. These are the kind of people that I like to talk to, people who can listen to another persons opinion of something and take it for what it is. They may not agree, but at least they're open minded enough to appreciate that what makes people unique is they're different styles, opinions and thoughts.

One of those people I've met sent me 3 different bands to review. I reviewed them all and gave my honest opinion, I gave 1 band a great review, the 2nd a mediocre review, and the 3rd a not so great review. Believe it or not this person (the owner of the label) never showed any type of animosity towards me because I didn't suck up and give every band a great review. Actually, I think it might have build some credibility to show that I will not only give reviews to "friends" or people I know and associate with. Shit, there are some bands I can't stand personally, but really love their music and vice versa.

Another person (from Punk Radio Cast)www.punkradiocast.com recently wrote - Nobody will ever like every band or music but PRC tries to be indie and play as much as possible.
I read a bunch of your reviews and you definitely don't pull any punches. It's refreshing to see no holds barred reviews even of bands I like. I can agree and disagree at the same time. PRC played a song by MDC and it totally ripped the punk music scene esp. Cali.

Keep the positive & negative feedback coming in, it can be very entertaining!

Thanks for the support -
