Lawyer Beaters – “Waited Enough”

Lawyer Beaters – “Waited Enough” - All that needs to be heard is the last song on “Waited Enough” and that pretty much generalizes the entire album. Just straightforward mid-tempo, pop-punk, multi-layered vocals, and the occasional album has some of the plaintive lyrics and perky hooks that define the pop punk genre. The foursome injects a rock sensibility into this 2008 release that their self-conscious punk brethren have been busy reinventing at the time. Waited Enough” maintains the good old-fashioned intensity nicely but about half the songs end up wandering into pop punk wasteland of nonspecific filler that many of the full length pop punk albums do . Standout cuts like "A Bad Day” and "She Cried" provide the best glimpse into Lawyer Beaters rock approach without being blatantly formulaic so as to win over even the most skeptical (snobby) listeners. The Lawyer Beaters are a pretty good band and have a handful of very good songs on “Waited Enough”, but I felt that the better songs were washed out or are masked by a few too many filler songs. Maybe the song order was a poor choice, I don’t know. It seems that their strongest songs got stuck on the back half of  the album and most of the filler songs were placed to the front of the album. This just seems to miss their intangible targets when otherwise fine tracks like " Story Of a Good Soldier” & “When We Were Waiters “end up overstating the record's consistent, obvious lyrical themes of heartbreak and all the other typical pop punk topics. Just a little stronger mix of songs and a little more vocal variation would go a long way toward making The Lawyer Beaters a stand out pop punk band , rather than just another decent three chord band with potential. Lawyer Beaters demonstrates that while not yet fully mature in their sound, they deserve credit for trusting themselves and not taking the trendy way out. Overall, The Lawyer Beaters are a pretty good band with a couple of great songs. They just need a little fine tuning and seem to have the sound that could make them pretty popular in the pop punk scene.
