Nerd Table – “Aqua Vulva”

Nerd Table – “Aqua Vulva” - I don’t know what planet these nerds came here from, but I want to be taken there. These guys attack many different issues with their wits, instead of fists. While pummeling you with well thought out hit after hit, their songs come across more like punch lines rather than aggressive messages. While they obviously are the first to make fun of their lack of prowess when it comes to love and life, their music is nothing to joke about. Mixing elements of some of the best ’77 punk bands, they unleash dynamic songs with sly hooks, scratchy corkscrew guitar solos, and hyperactive mad scientist vocals. Taking a guffaw of humor from bands such as The Dickies and The Dwarve, a smear of street grime from bands such as The Circle Jerks, and a touch of pop seduction, the music is funny, tough and catchy enough to cause spasms of head nodding and foot tapping. They seem to build from the similar blueprint that many punk bands do, but build their songs with their own off-kilter sensibility and contagious melodies. Having said all of that, like most of the best punk rock, thinking too hard about Nerd Table goes against the spirit of the whole experience. If you’re looking for a band that isn’t a cookie cutter band from the usual genres then I would recommend getting this 10 track release.

FN Punks – “Live at the Hinge”

FN Punks – “Live at the Hinge”  - Honestly, I have reservations about the idea of reviewing a live Cd for the first time I listen to a band. Usually live CD’s aren’t the best sound quality and since I’ve never heard them before what can I compare them against. I mean do they always sound like this, was this a “good” night or an “off” night, did they mean to be off time or is it just fucked up? So many questions and distractions, it just takes a lot of enjoyment out of listening to a new band for the first time. With that disclaimer out there I’m interested to hear what FN Punks has to offer.

To start the vocals are drowned out quite a bit and the guitar sound is a little over powering, but all in all, FN Punks has some potential. They did a decent live cover of “Monster Mash” that with a better recording or studio time could be very good. Unfortunately, a few of the other songs with the live recording just get lost in the overwhelming sound of the guitar. A good example is,  “Metal Stability” which sounds like a decent song, but with the vocals being drowned out  and the distortion of the live recording there is just too much going on to really get into it.

So I think FN Punks sounds like a decent band to check out live and has potential to be a band I would listen to on a semi-frequent basis, but to be fair until I have a less “busy” recording to check out I’ll have to reserve judgment before I give a thumbs up or down.

Bull Lee – “Self Titled”

Bull Lee – “Self Titled” – HA..HA..HA.. I should have known by the cover that this was going to be crap (The cover is a color picture of a female torso from the neck down wearing a leather halter top with gold accents, showing some belly) Instantly I should have known this was going to be one of those studio created punk bands. The first song starts off with off key vocals and off time back vocals and just continues with 9 other terrible songs before the nightmare is over.  The lyrics are terrible and have no flow to them and seem awkward at best. The musical section of the band is decent, but doesn’t show anything that 20,000 other bar bands don’t  play everyday.  This band’s sound has less chemistry than Star Jones and her soon to be ex-husband.

Shit, with as bad as this is, Bull Lee and their lame attempt at a punk band should have hooked up with Joe Simpson and asked him to promote them as the next “IT” punk bank like he did for his lame ass daughter, Ashley. OK,  I can’t take this bullshit attempt at a made for radio punk wannabe band  anymore, I’m going to my garage and hammering nails into my skull to get this terrible sound out of my head.

Kepi Ghoulie /Flav Giorgini – “Split 7” "

Kepi Ghoulie /Flav Giorgini – “Split 7” " - This is one of those records that upon hearing it was going to be released I was waiting to get a copy. I’m a big fan of acoustic punk and had read that this split 7” was VERY good. So when Squinty Joe asked if I wanted to review it, I was pretty stoked to say the least. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with both sides of this release and was really expecting to be blown away. Both musicians have a slightly different sound to their vocals, but both come off as acoustic hippy folk crap. Honestly, after listening to it, the first thing I thought was that my Father-in-law, (an avid fan of hippy folk music of the 60’s & 70’s) would probably enjoy this record more than any punk I could think of. I can’t even say that this has even a hint of punk influence other than the names involved and that the tracks were recorded at Sonic Iguana. I have to say, this is probably the biggest disappointment of an album, I’ve heard all year.

Slaughter and The Dogs – “Manchester 101”

Slaughter and The Dogs – “Manchester 101” – A tight spunky quartet from Manchester, England has been in the gutters of punk before it’s notorious 1977 inception. Slaughter and The Dogs took punk’s raw, quick energy and immediately applied their hard driven harmony of raw rock influenced to create their core sound.  Their sound is rippled with impolite thoughts and honest “What you see, is what you get” attitude. Yet, unlike many of their early punk peers, Slaughter and the dogs have maintained their sharper side and street influence to skirt the mellower progression that many others have fallen victim to.  Fast forward to Queens Hall, Nuneaton, 12/07/2005 and you can witness one of the many live shows they’ve been performing on and off, for over 3 decades. The video quality is fantastic, with crystal clear clarity (say that 5 times fast) and plenty of different angles. Unfortunately, the sound quality has some major flaws when it comes to the back up vocals and the over powering volume of the drums.

Also the band came off as boring until the 9th song “I’m Mad”, where Wayne Barrett (the singer) seems to wake up a bit and really get into the music. From that point forward his stage presence is 100% more energetic and full of upbeat passion. The one MAJOR POSITIVE of this DVD performance is the guitar play of Mick Rossi. Mick is a master of his craft and unbelievable to watch and listen to. His solos get my blood pumping and jaw dropping to the detailed sound he can create. As far as the video interview on this DVD it was a bit boring and dragged out, but from the standpoint of a punk historian it has some interesting material. If you’re already a fan of Slaughter and The Dogs, I’m sure you’ll want this DVD. If you’re not already a fan, you might want to check out a few of their songs or CD’s before you make this purchase.

999 – “Nasty Lies” (DVD)

999 – “Nasty Lies” (DVD) – The Sex Pistols, “Never Mind The Bollocks” may have appeared revolutionary at the time, but 999’s legendary pogo influencing, rage and pure wrath was the true feeling of the streets of London in the late 70’s. Though 999 never gained the notoriety of The Sex Pistols or The Clash, they’ve been able to stay together and pounding the stages for over 30 years. This DVD is a snapshot of what they’ve been doing all these years and is filled with 18 tracks that cascade their journey from 1976 thru 04/15/2006 on their show recorded and filmed at The Forum, Darlington. The band really shows why they’ve been able to perform for so long with high energy and a chemistry that can only be accomplished by loving what they do and being together as a band for as long as they have. The sound & film quality are first rate and come across crystal clear in all aspects of production. Some songs that really stood out to me as excellent are; “I really Like you”, “Lie, Lie, Lie” , “Nasty, Nasty”, & “I’m Alive” . The interview on this DVD is one of the better interviews I’ve seen on a music DVD with candid heart felt answers. If you’re a fan of 999 or older English Pop punk than I recommend picking up this DVD today.

Failure Figure – “Hugs, Kisses, & Deathwishes”

Failure Figure – “Hugs, Kisses, & Deathwishes” – This debut EP is 6 tracks of  decent punk rock that provides little personality to keep my interest. The band members play their instruments well enough, but the hooks don’t draw me in and the singer just bores me. They seem to have a metal/thrash influence to them and that might be what makes me not get into them at all. The guitarist uses some Metalica sounding riffs and the singer extends his notes out theatrically like a heavy metal singer.  I can’t say they’re a bad band, their just not a band that I would listen to. If you’re feeling like you need a shot of 80’s heavy metal influenced tunes, then “Hugs, Kisses, & Deathwishes, might just be up your Hessian alley. Otherwise, if you’re not a head banger at heart, then you would want to pass on this release.

UTD – “HeadOn”

UTD – “HeadOn” - may not be considered the most innovative or polished punk rock band to hit your stereo, but it certainly isn’t lacking when it comes to being free spirited and inspired while carrying a fair share of high speed furry. With each song, passion slashes through every track like a tornado through a trailer park on this 11 track debut and the storm doesn’t let up until the final note of the last song. The wrath of their message perfectly matches the intensity of their music and will suck you in like quicksand. Whether they’re singing about, one night stands, shitty jobs or the corrupt and decayed state of society they did the topic head on with a no holds bar approach. UTD have 11 tracks of razor sharp hardcore combined with a gruff, take no shit attitude  This is kick you in the head hardcore street punk that will smash and crash through every song with overtly political lyrical themes & incredible sonic aggression. Any way you put it, UTD blow away any, over produced Neu-core attempt at a band that seem to be the rage of the youngsters these days. Like many debuts, “Head On“ successfully captures  UTD’s rawness and concentrated sound like only a great and hardcore band can. This album is a pure punk, in your face album that can not disappoint even the elitists of punk rockers. The songs I enjoyed the most are “Mental Health”, “Secret Identity” & “Think Talk”, but does it really matter, there is not one bad or even filler song on “Head On”. So if you want to hear a great new band, fuck the state of the economy and buy this shit.

Order of the White Rose – “War Machine”

Order of the White Rose – “War Machine” – First off, I love the fact that the members of Order of the White Rose are keeping punk music, punk. Yeah I know that sounds ridiculous, but Punk Rock has gotten so timid and P.C. it’s just nice to see a band stand up for what they believe in, without being cliché. As far as their music goes it’s intelligently political and full of pissed off well thought out lyrics. Order of the White Rose hits you right in the mouth with a combination of frenzied screaming left wing hardcore punk thought provoking lyrics and speed blur of razor sharp licks. These tracks are not for the faint of heart. If you can’t take warp speed drums & guitars mixed with heavy in your face left wing lyrics, you need to stay away from this album or your heart might explode. If you can handle heavy political views with a message and some heavy hitting cuts, then this CD is what the doctor ordered. My personal favorite songs on this album are “Who Would Jesus Bomb?” & “Seeds of Destruction” they both have some great deeply thought out lyrics that can make even the most conservative of punks question the US government. Sure any band can sing against the war, the stupidity of the president and the corruption of the US government. How many of them can back those opinions with well thought our arguments and quote facts.

The Bastard Suns / No Fuego (Split) “Dropping Expectations”

The Bastard Suns / No Fuego (Split) “Dropping Expectations” – I’ll start with The Bastard Suns, I have mixed feeling about their songs. There are parts of a few of the songs I really enjoy, but then there are parts of the same songs that annoy the shit out of me. An example would be the 1st song on “Dropping Expectations”, “My Pint”. It starts with a blast of a powerful bar room anthem and about a minute through the song it breaks into a reggae-ish freestyle that you might expect from a band like 311 or Smash Mouth and then after about 90 seconds of that annoying freestyle it ends in the same strong way it started. It seems that The Bastard Suns want to appeal to both the alternative scene, but they also want to cut a little deeper toward the punk scene by making some sort of social statements with both their lyrics and self- consciously eclectic style. The band has a knack of combining dancehall reggae with blue collar punk, when they put their minds to it, but they don’t seem to put their minds there often enough. Unfortunately (for me I guess) The Bastard suns are aiming more for the Frat Rock, Sublime fans and more the punk rock or Ska fans and come off more as a novelty college radio band than anything worth listening to. I’m sure they’re very popular in the PHI KAPPA keggers.

www.myspace.com/thebastardsuns

Now it’s time for No Fuego’s portion of the split. God damn it I was fooled!!!! And it's not even funny!! This is how the sneaky band members of No Fuego got me: The first track “Savvi” sounded great, it’s a mid tempo Dropkick Murphy’s style anthem (bagpipes and all) that catches your attention and makes you want to hear more of what they have to offer. The lyrics were good and had the same repeating chorus so you had something you can follow along with, the music was great and fit in perfectly ,and after the let down of The Bastard Suns I was happy to get a hold of something interesting. Then they smack me right a cross the face and fill the rest of the CD with Alternative rock bullshit.  Son of a Mother am I pissed!  I was expecting something really good from this entire CD and all I get is 1 ½ good songs (“Savvi” and the beginning and end of “My Pint”) I’m sorry to report that this entire CD was a flop.

30 Day Warranty – “The Damage Has Been Done”

30 Day Warranty – “The Damage Has Been Done” – Yup it’s an awful name and their name fits them well. The majority of the songs don’t really vary in tempo or structure, so the album grows old extremely fast. In all the songs, the choruses follow a format as they drop in tempo while the guitar and additional percussion support slow, emo-ish (not quite, but almost there) vocals. This happens in literally every one of the songs, and I found myself getting really tired of it – real fast. . If I have ever heard a cookie cutter Warped Tour band, 30 Day Warranty is without a doubt one of them. This is also where the lyrics become less interesting and the vocals just become completely annoying.

If  there was a 30 day warranty  for this CD (and I paid for it), I would be redeeming it as fast as possible to get my money back  Don’t waste your time on this 7 song EP of Warped Tour theme music.

The Over Attacks – “Classified As A Lunatic”

The Over Attacks – “Classified As A Lunatic” - WOW! I was pleasantly surprised as soon as I heard this album. The Over Attacks hone a feverish, rapid assault on “Classified as a Lunatic” with more finely crafted songwriting, irresistible hooks and impassionate lyrics than you can shake a stick at.  This 10 song LP is distinguished by the surging energy of smashing/crashing drums, the hungry bass lines, the furious buzzing guitar licks and the passionate/ melodic vocals of the scratchy voices front man Antti. This band seems to have the type of energy that many bands try to conjure up, but few can pull off so effortlessly. I’m sure every show The Over attacks play, the place goes nuts and explodes with every gang chorus. There isn’t one let down song on this album, so choosing the stand out songs is difficult. That being said I would have to say “Pawnbroker’s (day)” & “Years of Madness” are a hook addicts dream and “Stand in League” is an incredible infectious gang vocal laden cut. Really though, there isn’t one bad song, so I would recommend checking out “Classified as a Lunatic”, you won’t be disappointed.

900 Pound Gorilla – “Self Titled”

900 Pound Gorilla – “Self Titled” – This CD is one of the most annoying albums to cross my path EVER. I’m not saying it’s the worst, the members of the band can play their instruments fine, it’s just the dirge rock that I am now forced to listen to. This bullshit encrusted dirge rock in on the level of Third Eye blind or Fuel. I can’t even explain to the extent of the awfulness that I am experiencing right now as I listen to this 13 song nightmare.  I guess the cover art (that looks like an airbrushed gorilla face), should have been a warning. Shit, I mean this is the kind of crap that the jocks would listen to at the shore, cruise around in their pick up trucks and Camaros yelling shitty remarks at girls. Alright I’m going to stop, because I can’t listen to this anymore and I just want to move on and never look back.

Marx Revolution – “Spaceship KnifeFight”

Marx Revolution – “Spaceship KnifeFight” - What a fucking waste of time and energy.  This band reminds me of No Use for a Name inbred with some crappy ska band and the singer of Amber Pacific. There’s the late 90’s 3rd generation oversaturated NUFAN guitar sound, with horns, and a singer who is trying WAY too hard to sing the lyrics.  I guess the biggest problem I have with this album (besides the singer’s vocal style) is the lack of escaping repetition in their sound. The songs, particularly in the latter half, start to drag together and are not distinct enough to differentiate themselves from one another. The times when they venture out from their typical sound is when they excel, but they don't do it very often. It’s safe to say that I didn’t enjoy this album and would recommend passing this by, even when you see it in the 3 for $8 bargain bin at your local record store. It’s that bad.

Mafia PHC - "demo"

Mafia PHC - "demo" - Thrashcore that sounds like someone screaming just to see how much damage he can do to his throat and vocal chords. The dude’s voice even cracks a few times when he can't reach the vocal level he's trying to get to. Instrumentally there isn't anything to complain about if you're into thrash core type music. The drums are 1000 miles a minute and the guitars provide a decent backdrop of sound, but the vocals make me wish the singer was never born. Honestly I couldn't understand more than 3-4 words from this demo. In some context that's not a bad thing, but with this crap fest of screaming it just worsens the attempt at making "music". If I could go back in time to stop the members of this band from meeting, I would. Since I can’t, all I can do is to warn you to stay far away from anything released by this band.

Destroyers of the Universe – “Self Titled”

Destroyers of the Universe – “Self Titled” - I'm really glad I got the opportunity to review Destroyers of The universe prior to listening to their new self titled album. Now I can genuinely appreciate how far they’ve come in a year. On the previous demo I reviewed, I gave them a less then stellar review (see below);

"Thrash guitar, hardcore style drumming, ska horns & almost (but not quite) screamo vocals. I love that these guys are trying something different, but I couldn't get into it. Each piece of this musical pie isn't bad alone, but combined it's just to busy with no organization of the sound. These guys need to go back to the kitchen and try a different recipe."

Most of the above listed elements are still there, but it sounds like they took their scattered pieces of music and fine tuned their band into a more organized sound.

This album is full of fury, rage and cool ska/reggae upstrokes. It's impressive how these guys can switch gears from red-hot hardcore to slick reggae influenced dubs in the blink of an eye.

A couple of songs that really stand out to me are Clap Clap & Bitch Bitch Bitch. Clap Clap starts out fast and furious and doesn't slow down until the gang vocal chorus and then just explodes again with energy. The song is faster than a drag race and just as intense. Bitch Bitch Bitch is just a solid back to basics punk song that mixes in a few aqua effect solos and solids lyrics. Overall it's great to see/hear a band progress from the typical garage band into a band that has a solid sound that definitely stands out from the cookie cutters.
