9:18 – “The Deep Dish EP”

9:18 – “The Deep Dish EP” – My expectations were admittedly low for the 9:18 EP, but when I popped in the CD I was pleasantly surprised, with a combination of steady tempo skate punk and big choruses. This CD drew all kinds of parallels to other artists in my mind, most notably Pennywise, Millencolin, and No Use For A Name. The songs are fast and catchy along the lines of fast melodic skate punk while occasionally slowing down to let you catch your breath. This band knows how to play their instruments pretty well. I would describe their music as being reminiscent of older Pennywise stuff but with less leads. The bass player can really fly around the frets. The drumming is fast and furious but knows when to slow down the pace. The vocals are something that really stands out on this record. It’s hard to describe the lead singer’s voice, maybe a mix of Pennywise & No Use For A Name. While the songs are extremely varied, there are more than a few occasions in which the music itself grows stale. The effort is there, but the songwriting is lacking at times. While a few of the tracks have great hooks to them, there aren’t enough to keep my interest for more than 30 seconds. While personally I wasn’t that into them, I can see where fans of Pennywise, Millencolin, No Use For A Name, Strung Out, or any other mid 90’s Fat Wrecks skate punk band would eat this shit up.

There’s No Tomorrow – “Demo”

There’s No Tomorrow – “Demo” - This is what I call “back to basics” punk rock & I mean this in the best way possible. For some reason, this reminds me of Black Flag at times, maybe due to the sing along chorus on songs like "Anything Anything," or maybe the melodic hardcore and personal song topics which seem as introspective as they are political. It seems like these songs are about getting burned, wrapping up in gauze and aloe to heal the wounds and trying to get on with getting on. I've been listening to this album for about 2 months now and each time I still can’t help but bob my head along with every beat.

Tommy Gustafsson & The Idiots Split - “Subwaste/Tommy Gustafsson & The Idiots Split”

Tommy Gustafsson & The Idiots Split - “Subwaste/Tommy Gustafsson & The Idiots Split” – This side of the split (if it was a record not a CD) is a little more on the Lars Frederiksen and the bastards/Rockabilly side of the punk spectrum then Subwaste, but just as powerful & energetic. I’m not the biggest fan of that rockabilly/ rock-n-roll sound, but Tommy Gustafsson & The Idiots do it  with catchy hooks and crunchy riffs  that I find irresistibly infectious. It truly is an incredible musical experience when one band manages to excite you, impress you and elevate you to a level of complete and total happiness. The album is balls out catchy, never forcing bigger hooks than are necessary, and while it doesn’t break new ground, it certainly excels in all its efforts, and always remains entertaining. All sorts of music fans will enjoy this record – it’s even catchy enough to appeal to the pop-punk crowd and raw enough to appeal to the street punks. If you’ve never listened to Tommy Gustafsson & The Idiots Split or any other heavily punk influenced rockabilly, throw away your biases and listen carefully – you just might have a great fucking time, I did.

Subwaste – “Subwaste/Tommy Gustafsson & The Idiots Split”

Subwaste – “Subwaste/Tommy Gustafsson & The Idiots Split” - When you’ve got a great punk rock record on your hands, especially with all the fire and fury inherent in the punk scene, miraculous things can happen… time can change. Take the seven seconds of silence between tracks for instance, they transform into a seemingly everlasting bummer… a borderline torturous eternity. Don’t let it stop!!! I’m almost compelled to yell such things in the down-time between songs as I catch my breath between songs: This split is a serious rock-out, balls to the walls,  thrill ride, Subwaste have scrupulously adhered to the formula of taking your breath away fanfare and ended up with what I can only describe as a sweat inducing good time of a record. The production is a fitting straight-forward sound that flirts with the ghosts of punk rock of yesteryear. Truthfully I have few, if any complaints worth voicing. Every song  by Subwaste on this split is an energetic joy ride, and I would imagine,  that the live show is where the magic truly lies. Fun, humorous, a serious rush like a punch in the wind pipe, surprisingly accessible - most everything I like in a punk influenced album; There are standout tracks scattered throughout the album, and there is not one song that will have your finger twitching to skip over it. In the end, Subwaste is an extremely strong debut album that promises a bright future for this European band.

Sick Sick Sick – “Free Shit”

Sick Sick Sick – “Free Shit” - Tough guy hardcore is the brand that Sick Sick Sick has always played, and their newest effort “Free Shit” is no exception. Heavy on the breakdowns, Sick Sick Sick offers up just under 12 minutes of chugga-chugga hardcore. Unlike a lot of today’s Hardcore you find some variation from song to song, but that’s what I’ve come to expect from Sick Sick Sick. I found this to be a very enjoyable CD that actually had a decent amount of lasting value. The word self prefaces almost everything about this CD. It isn’t really a produced CD or even titled. This CD is a mix of songs that Sick Sick Sick self-produced & put onto a disc that they put some of their recent tracks on and are selling for $1 to cover shipping. It has been self-released for a few weeks now, with the band not making a penny off it. They just hand it out to everyone at shows, and let you download tons of their music off of their website. That's a lot of hard work for seven songs that are on this CD. Luckily for the band, the hard work has paid off. There are few bands out there that sound as good as Sick Sick Sick and continue to press on not worrying about making a dime. I love every element of this band, their hardcore street sound, their passion for what they do, and their relentless pursuit of staying true to their punk rock roots. Unlike most dollar menu items, this $1 CD will not leave you burping up grease and curse you with heart burn, wishing that you never spent your buck.

Punched Out – “Self Titled”

Punched Out – “Self Titled” – When I listed to four songs and two of them I really enjoyed (Can’t Stop Thinking About Her & The Holy Man), but the other two (Hey There Friend & Lonely Ugly Loser) didn’t do much for me. After listening a few more times I realized it wasn’t that I didn’t like the other two songs, it was more that they are songs that you need to be in the right mood to listen to. Each of the four songs is on the mellower side of European pop punk/Indie scene, filled with subtle hooks and choruses. I have no trouble at all saying that anyone who likes melodic pop punk will like this album as it is definitely a refreshing, insightful piece of work. It's not something that most street punk or hardcore fans would pick up, but it's definitely worth a listen for anyone into the mellower side of Punk Rock. The melodies are catchy, tight, mid-tempo tunes, but what drives this album and makes it so passionate are the lyrics and what they have to say.

Second To None – “Wreck Of Rock –n- Roll”

Second To None – “Wreck Of Rock –n- Roll” – The album as a whole is fairly homogenous, which is one of its few shortcomings, but virtually every song is solid, so it’s not that the music is bad by any means, it’s just a little too similar at times. If you’re looking for an energetic,  hard rock album full of hooks and a few memorable melodies, and an almost hard grunge sound with a few similarities to Soundgarden, Alice in Chains,  or Neil Young, then Wreck of Rock –n-Roll is what you’ve been waiting for. Within the first few seconds, the impression is given that this is going to be an fun album. However, a crucial question lingers – will the fun last? The answer is an emphatic NO. This album is like a night out drinking with the boys. It’s fun of energy, bravado & heavy drinking, but when leaving you with very little to remember the next day. After you wake up the next day you can barely remember what the night was about not because of the drinking, but the lack of substance. Really it’s all something you’ve heard many times before at any local bar with a local hard rock band playing the opening act for the band you really came to see. Second To None is probably a band that is better when seen live in a dark smoky bar after you’ve thrown down a few.

Punch You In The Face – “First EP”

Punch You In The Face – “First EP” – For their first EP this isn’t too bad and won't annoy the piss out of you, but also one I wouldn’t pay money for it either. The fact that it sounds like it was recorded manually out of someone’s garage actually makes it sound better. Who would of guessed? Overall, Punch You In The Face provides an overly simplistic garage band sound with little left to the imagination. What does that mean? It means, it’s a nice way of saying that they need to keep practicing, gel their timing, write some more complex songs before they can be considered a band that someone would purposely seek out to listen. Their best song “Rock-n-Roll Pussyhole” lyrically is entertaining, but otherwise needs some work to solidify the flow of the song

The Jesse Minutes – “EP”

The Jesse Minutes – “EP” – The music is okay not bad but not good it's just there. Why is it just there? Maybe it's because they're trying to fit the sound of their lead singers Missa's voice into the wrong genre.  The instrumental section of the band is pretty tight & catchy, most of the lyrics are pretty good (except Teen Model – just awful), but the singers vocals are just annoying and manufactured. One thing I cannot stand and most other punks can't stand is when a singer that sounds like a pop singer tries to break into punk. I want to block my ears (with bananas), so I can’t hear her lips moving. If you’re into monotone female fronted fringe indie/punk college radio bands then this EP is right up your back alley.

No Secrets Between Sailors - “Demo”

No Secrets Between Sailors - “Demo” – No Secrets Between Sailors are a perfect example of a band that is full of talent, but hasn’t tapped that potential yet. Their self-released demo is full of moments of brilliance, but lacks a cohesive feel to make it excellent. Overall, No Secrets Between Sailors, lose direction in their songs by falling into pop clichés. Verses slow down into vocal solos, and then kick back into gear with fast choruses… we’ve heard it all before. Song structures are rarely varied, the vocals (minus a few spots) take very few risks, and there are 30 second parts to their songs where the band tries to do too much and the result is a muddy mess. The album left me with a lot of mixed feelings. I didn’t not like it, but it definitely didn’t grab me as anything great. Personally, I think No Secrets Between Sailors could be a great band, but just needs to put more of their soul into it to get over the cliché’ hump. If you are into finding bands before they become big, then you might want to check out this record.

Civil Blitzkrieg – “Five Minutes To Midnight”

Civil Blitzkrieg – “Five Minutes To Midnight” - Bands & CD’s like this are why I started Punk Rock Review, I wanted others to be able to get exposure to great DIY punk bands that don’t usually get exposure because of their under-produced style. Civil Blitzkrieg isn’t the most polished or ground breaking band but their energy and style reminds you why you got into punk rock in the first place. The singer, AJ’s voice is raspy & horse, the instrumental section is simple and the lyrics are written with sarcastic one liners, and put together these guys create a catchy Operation Ivy/Ska-ish style of street punk.  While they might be expressing their feeling towards politics, police brutality & their dislike for Michael Moore, you can hear how much fun they have playing their music. The highlight songs on this CD for me are; “Failure’s Back In Style”, “A Letter To The Rebel King” & “State Run Brutality”, but there really isn’t a bad song on this CD.

The Dickies – “Go Banana’s” (live)

The Dickies – “Go Banana’s” (live) - After more than 25 + years as a band, The Dickies have released what is a live collection of some of their songs spanning their entire career. For the uninitiated, The Dickies have become the oldest surviving punk band still recording new material and will still rock your Dickies into the dirt. They’re a band who like their music sarcastic, fast and loud. There are fist-pumping anthems aplenty in any piece of The Dickies catalogue, which translates well into the live disc. You can feel the energy of the venue flow right onto the disc -- and it is an infectious force of energy that few bands can translate on to an album as well as The Dickies. The crowd knows almost every word to every song, and the production is so masterfully done that they never drown out Leonard’s voice, but simply compliment it when prevalent. The excellent balance between Leonard’s vocals and those of the crowd adds an intimate feeling to the album, giving the impression of actually being at the show and hearing these tracks for yourself. The production manages to retain all the raw energy from The Dickies live show, while never sacrificing sound quality. The band is at the top of their game throughout and the track selection is stellar. It's a must-have for fans of the band and also a great starting point for new listeners as well, as it puts a selection of their hits in one great package.

(Vlad And) The Impalers - This Blood's For You

(Vlad And) The Impalers - This Blood's For You – You know those bands you hear about, but have never heard, that’s Vlad and The Impalers for me. I honestly had no idea at all what to expect. “This Blood’s For You” is the kind of album that you listen to and wonder why you haven’t heard them before. The production is perfect, the vocals don’t drown out the instrumentals or vice versa. In a sea of imitators and clone bands, Vlad and the Impalers actually have an original sound both in their song writing and the production of the album.  This Blood’s For You is 34.1 minutes of punk rock fury that leaves you trying to find your breath just listening to it.

The Answer Lies – “Four Deadly Questions & The Answer Lies Split”

The Answer Lies – “Four Deadly Questions & The Answer Lies Split” – I wish this split CD would have just been a “Four Deadly Questions” full length, rather than a split. The Answer Lies gave me a deep pounding headache and heartburn the rest of the night.  The vocals cut through me like a cold wind and in no way made me want to hear this screaming excuse for hardcore again. If you want to torture your neighbors, put The Answer Lies in your stereo, put the speakers to the windows, and sit back as you watch everyone run to cover their ears from this sound pollution.

Four Deadly Questions – “Four Deadly Questions & The Answer Lies Split”

Four Deadly Questions – “Four Deadly Questions & The Answer Lies Split” –. Okay, so this album is hell bent speedy, revved-up punk with a little of distorted industrial punk thrown in. From the first note this section of this split album is filled with energy & attitude. The first track on the CD "Get Your Numb chucks and your Dad’s car, I know where we can get a gun" grabs you by the collar and knocks you into the wall. This is definitely a band everyone who enjoys distorted revved up punk rock should take a listen to.

The Adrenals – “Lumine Fever”

The Adrenals – “Lumine Fever” Have you ever wondered what Cher would sound like in a punk band? Me neither, but unfortunately that’s the first thing I thought of when I turned The Adrenals “Lumine Fever” on. To be honest, without looking at the bands bio, I couldn’t tell if The Adrenals was a male or female fronted band. Musically, The Adrenals have a murky crunch with some nice bass lines & riffs. There were two major reasons why I would rather rub my balls with coarse sandpaper then listen to this release again.

  1. The singer’s voice fluctuates from a low “Cher” moan to a screechy Lunachic’s tone.
  2. Whoever the fuck was doing the vocal dub intro’s is an annoying as hell shit pants. Have you ever met one of those people who do something funny once and then they just wear it out to the point that you want to jam a potato down their annoying throat. These intros are more annoying than those “Watttt’s Up” commercial guys.

So before you waste your time and hard earned money, remember you were warned

The Erase Hers – “Out Of My Mind”

The Erase Hers – “Out Of My Mind” – I can’t find any other way to simply describe my feeling on “Out Of My Mind” than “Eh”. I mean this CD is good for what it is, female fronted synthesizer /keyboard new wave pop. The singer (Tanz) has a decent voice & all the instruments are played extremely well, I just wasn’t feeling it. During the song “Clone You”, some of  Tanz’s  “You’s” get “goaty”, but that might have been the intention. Really this EP is a little too mellow for me, so I had a few other’s who might be interested in it. They agree that it was OK, but nothing they would go out and buy either.

V/A – Tribute to The Queers – “God Save The Queers”

V/A – Tribute to The Queers – “God Save The Queers” – I’ve always felt that Joe King was an excellent song writer, but “God Save The Queers” solidifies the talent of his song writing ability. Never before on a tribute CD has more mediocre bands kept my interest. Don’t get me wrong there are some GREAT renditions of this disc (Toys That Kill – Goodbye California”, The Femurs – “I Wanna Be Happy”, Teenage Rehab – “Too Many Twinkies”, & The Steinways – “I Don’t Get Invited To The Prom/Debra Jean”), but what really stood out to me is the bands who’s style I don’t usually enjoy. With the use of The Queers songs I actually found the bands tolerable. Overall I only found there to be one song intolerable (The Front – “I Hate Everything”), but that was because of the singers vocals, not the actual music. So as far as Tribute CD’s go this is one of the best I’ve heard to date. It is definitely worth the $5 that Asian Man Records (www.asianmanrecords.com) is selling it for.

Teenage Rehab – “Goodbye Sanity”

Teenage Rehab – “Goodbye Sanity” In a past review of Teenage Rehabs prior release “More Than A Job” I felt that they had too much of a Modern Rock sound for my liking. On “Goodbye Sanity” there is a hell of a lot more core punk influence. This EP bangs out 5 infectious cuts, but the song “Suicide” stands out to me as a signature anthem that will put Teenage Rehab over the top. “Suicide” instantly reminded me of the old Suicidal Tendencies song “Institutionalized”.  They both possess hypnotizing drum beats, bouncy bass lines & frantic vocals. I know to many people this comparison is complete blasphemy, but I can’t help it if Teenage Rehab hit a homerun with this one. The other four songs on this EP will not disappoint you either, they have subtle influences of The Queers, Black Flag & The Descendents in a way that allows their own style to flow through without leaving you thinking you’ve heard them before.

The New Threat – “ Fist full of TNT”

The New Threat – “ Fist full of TNT” – This is the kind of quick hitting, in your face, rock your fucking tits off CD. This CD is jam packed with a mix of some remastered previous releases and some new great tracks. “Fist full of TNT” is a perfect blend of politically sarcastic street punk & NYHC blue collar anthems. I love the fact that their lyrics confront the idea of conformity and standing up for who you are. They take the stance to be an individual and say “Fuck Society” “You should live the way you want to live”.  TNT is the type of high powered band that if they don’t get your juices flowing and dancing you are either dead or just not giving it a chance. Recently I saw TNT live and I must say that though I’m a huge fan of their CD’s, there is nothing better than being part of their live shows.

New Society of Anarchists – “For the Forgotten”

New Society of Anarchists – “For the Forgotten” – I’m glad I’m not forgotten, because I would be returning this “gift”. For the most part each song sounds like a combination of death metal riffs, double bass drum thrash and just really shitty awful growling vocals. On the song “Blood Shed” there is a touch of good hardcore mixed in with the other aforementioned bullshit when the singer isn’t trying to rip out his own vocal chords. Thrash/Death Metal/sometimes hardcore = Punch you in the throat terrible.

Left Arm – “Lure Of the Light”

Left Arm – “Lure Of the Light” – This is one of those bands that put out their EP on myspace bulletin flyers as “Free EP Download”. So I see it and think what the fuck, I’ll give it a listen. It took me two songs to realize why they’re offering this EP for Free Download. This EP is boring as hell! Forget about sleeping pills, put on this generic melodic half-assed punk by numbers with a few melodies, a few hooks and no balls. Only if you’re looking to cure insomnia or put yourself in a self imposed comma should you even attempt to “Lure of the Light”.

Genuine Imitations – “Self Titled”

Genuine Imitations – “Self Titled” – Their name should be “God Awful Genuine Imitations”. This jumbled mess of obscure sounds and art fag vocals are just a bad imitation of The Dead Milkmen mixed with a touch of Ween. The shame is I don’t even think the die-hard fanatical fans of either of those bands would find this over produced + noise ridden train wreck of a CD the least bit entertaining. To conclude; Genuine Imitations made me realize, yes there is something worse then getting your nuts stuck in a vice grip.
