Jacob Idle - "Your Parents Are Lying To You"

Jacob Idle - "Your Parents Are Lying To You"

I always love the idea of acoustic punk, but usually I'm really disappointed by the results. Unfortunately, "Your Parents Are Lying To You" is no exception to that trend. I applaud Jacob Idle for the effort and attempt to take on this seldom successfully sub-genre of punk. This album falls short for me because Jacob Idle seems to try "too hard" to be acoustic.  That's not to say there aren't some great lyrics. Lyrically this album is very entertaining, but the instrumental acoustic part of the album makes it to "folksy" for my taste. The song "Pop Punk Song" is pretty funny, but other than that I have to say pass.

Lost in Greenpoint - "Allegiance"

Lost in Greenpoint - "Allegiance"

Warning: Disregard any form of sub-genre classification, because this is certainly not in the mold of any sub-category punk. This is pissed off, fuck you, fuck this, fuck that and fuck authority punk rock. Whatever happened to questioning authority, pissed off youth, and civil disobedience? "Allegiance" is a surprisingly refreshing blast to a past of Punk Rock before all the corporate sponsored & franchised punk bands. Lost in Greenpoint. -"Allegiance", blasts in your face lyrics that confront many of today's political, sociological and economical topics that many bands skirt around but, are too scared to take it on head to head. It's heavy, pounding and intense, and political as fuck. The hell with my knees, after listening to this great album I'm going to go skate.

My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone - "Heavenly Bodies"

My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone - "Heavenly Bodies"

Sincere, well intentioned, Screamo/post-hardcore (or whatever the kids call it these days). Unfortunately, heart can only take a band so far. Memorable music needs to carry the music for the remainder of the journey and that's where this stumbles. It's not bad, but the vocals are just too much on the Screamo side for me. Instrumentally this band is as solid as a punk band can get, but the vocals make me cower in fright from the horrifying shrill sounds coming from my speakers. Really the band is talented, but not my cup of metaphorical tea. Unless you're a fan of Screamo, stay away from this CD.

Sobriety Rejects - "Greatest Hits"

Sobriety Rejects - "Greatest Hits"

If the sound quality wasn't so poor I would have probably been a lot more excited by these tracks. Actually the vocals are drowned out by the lead guitar and take away the focus on the good song writing.  Putting the poor sound quality aside, I have to say, "Fuck yeah!" to another great Poppy Canadian band. The sound may be a little murky at times, but phrases like "production values" probably aren't at the top of "Sobriety Rejects" list of things to be concerned about. Instead, I suspect their 1-2-3-4 list probably reads like this: 1. Drink. 2. Rock. 3. Roll. 4. Repeat.  A definite party record.

Rich White Males - "We ain't no musicians"

Rich White Males "We ain't no musicians" - Brash, silly, snotty vocals with a "Gilman Street” attitude & feel. " Russ " the singer of Rich White Males has a one of a kind voice only comparable with the uniqueness of Jello Biafra.

Unlike the prior review I did of Rich White Males, this album doesn't have the Ramones meets Guttermouth feel. Rather "We ain't no musicians" focuses on their own unique sound, style and humor, which is a mix of every style of punk you can think of. These guys don't follow the directions on how to be a punk band. They just go out and blaze their own punk rock trail.  All that and you can get their 7" in colored vinyl that comes with a CDR with extra unreleased tracks. - What are you waiting for? Go to http://www.punknjunkrecords.com/ and order that shit!

The Bricktops "Stay Home" Review

The Bricktops -"Stay Home" Energetic, fresh and rockin' good old school style pop punk was the best quick description of "Stay Home" I could think of.  That was until I read their Myspace page quote and it really says it the best. The Quote reads, “This is real POP PUNK you stupid motherfuckers!"

The Bricktops sound a lot like Joe Q and co., and they do it well. They have made some fantastic music along the way. Instrumentally, their style matches the 3 chord progressions of the Ramones/Queers format, though vocally, Kevin G’s  voice is a little more raspy, and it captures this Surfy Pop Punk style magnificently. Lyrically, these songs are jam packed with well-crafted one-liners and appealing sarcasm. The highlight on this album is the combination of the Queers-ish style mixed with finely written story telling lyrics.  This is really one of best mastered, written & produced pop punk albums I've heard in the last couple years and I've heard a ton of them. You want to spend your money on this! Check them out at,  http://www.myspace.com/thebricktops

"Stay Home" will be released 09/25/07 and be availible through,

Eddie & The Louvers - "Demo"

Eddie & The Louvers - "Demo"   In your face, hard hitting, oi-coated, gang vocal filled punk rock, that is rough and right off the streets. If this music doesn't make you want to mosh, I don't know what will. The band has attitude, super fast guitar work and harsh vocals. This blue collar/working class punk CD is full of oi,oi,oi's, drinking, fighting and fucking until you pass out. Street punk fans will dig this stuff. I found it funny how each song starts with a beer can opening. My favorite song from Eddie & The Louvers is “Naptime.”

One song though that I couldn’t stand was the song “Casper”.  I can’t tell if it’s a Casper the friendly ghost cover song or a song written about the show. The song just gave me yuck face as I made myself listen through it.  I think their style of music and the singer’s voice is just too crusty for the song and it takes a little away from the other great music they have on the CD.

The Poulsens – “Demo”

The Poulsens – “Demo” In the last couple of years the traditional 3 chord pop punk has been having a big resurgence, which is bringing out some outstanding music, like The Poulsens. We received some demo songs about a month ago from these guys and didn’t know much about them, other than they’re from Ottawa and the songs were produced/recorded/mixed & mastered by Jordan Bell from (one of my favorite bands) The Creeps.

The songs are a little off of the “traditional” pop punk path and have a touch of skate punk mixed in. So if you’re expecting a Ramones cover band, you’ll need to look elsewhere.  I can’t really think of a band to compare their sound too, but can tell you they have a sound that you will add to your favorites list. My favorite song of the lot is “You Walked Away”.  I liked it so much in fact, that upon hearing “You Walked Away”, I asked the band if it could be used on the upcoming compilation that Punk Rock Review is putting out.

Das Kapital – “Died True”-

Das Kapital – “Died True”- Ok I have to admit when I read their name I thought “What the fuck is this, a white power band? So, I went into this review with a preconceived notion. Then the 1st song I hear “The Miserable Human Race” sounds like a song from American History X, now I’m really creeped out. I do realize soon that they’re not a White Power band, just a very strange Alternative one. At times they sound a little punk (Ex, “El Bebe Elegante”), but to be completely honest it’s like they’re trying really hard to be “alternative”, just for the sake of being different.  As I listened to it more, I got a sick feeling in my stomach and really just wanted to stop listening to this. My suggestion would be to avoid this CD like a deep pot hole.
