Interview with The Leftovers
How did The Leftovers get started?
We started back in 2002. Playing in a small basement room with weird fake wooden walls... we drank alot of Vanilla Coke (back when it was still available).. we sucked. We were in High School. Being in a band was a way to waste a lot of time, have a lot of fun and try and get some girls. The first two reasons have worked out pretty well so far but we are still waiting on the 3rd.
Were any of you in bands prior to The Leftovers ?
Ya, we were in a few bands, but nothing worth talking about. Well, i guess its worth mentioning that Adam was in a MetalCore band called Burning July who sang about weird weather patterns and diary entries of doom. Kurt was in a band called The Outnumbered who has some cult status in Maine for being the only band to sing about telling donuts to shut the fuck up and streetwise swiss cheese. Yep. Pretty Lame.
Let's get this one out of the way. How did Adam get hooked up to play for The Queers on this last tour?
Adam got word that Joe was looking for a drummer for the winter tour, and that Geoff Useless (guitarist for the Guts, and our good friend) was playing bass. We had opened for the Queers a few times, and Joe knew the band and Adam. Geoff mentioned to Joe that Adam was availble and like magic the line up came together... and rocked yo' face!
So you toured in England last summer, what was that like?
Great! We made alot of good friends, and drank alot of good beer. Kurt sang ABBA kareoke in front of a pub full of locals and they baked him homemade crumpets that night. It was a great experience. We had a little bit of trouble because our van driver and tour promoter got a bit cheesed off at each other, leading our van driver to quit on the 2nd day of the tour. We had to take buses, trains and taxi's to shows for a week. Luckily we got a new driver named Doozer who was the man, and the english air guitar champion of 2005!
It seems like Pop-Punk is really on it's way back to the punk "scene", what are your thoughts?
Well we were thinking for our next album, it should be a concept album.. about like a wicked freaky house and murders and heartbreak, and sound all post-hardcore. SO this is kind of bad news for us.
Favorite place to play and why?
I dont know. This is a tough question. There is this club in Portland called the Big Easy. It sounds good, and if there are alot of people there its always fun. We always LOVE playing in NYC. The people and city are great, Ghostbusters was filmed there. Also Home Alone Two.. the bird lady! we saw that woman in central park!
Funniest thing you've seen at a show?
Naked people and blood.
Most bizarre place you've played?
We played at this place called the JC Cafe in New Hampshire. Thats Jesus Christ for JC. The place was FUCKED UP. Toilets on the WALLS with pictures in them. Also this big woman in spandex did rap music.
Are you on a label? If so, who?
We are on Rally Records out of the wonderful countryside ville of Mars PA. Please check them out. Rally is putting out our new album "On the Move" this spring 2007.
Who writes your songs and how are you inspired to write them?
Kurt does alot of the basic song writing. He brings in parts of songs and ideas, and the group arranges them. Its all pretty much a collaborative effort, with everybody putting their two cents in. We like to write songs about girls.
When you play at a show are you all serious or do you just fuck around??
We have fun at shows. We are fun guys, and we like to joke around, but when we play music we are serious in making it sound good. We arent going to fuck around and sound like shit cuz then your 5 bucks would be wasted. We are performers and your going to get a good show!
Any pre-show rituals?
The occasional budweiser, or five.
What do you do when your not playing music?
We do alot of things. Pool Hockey, eating food, going to waterparks, making horror movies, slip n slides, drinking kool aid, hopscotch, 4 square, making love, partying, going to the zoo, going to the green house, some of us go to school.
What is your evaluation of the current punk scene?
Theres too many bands. If you suck, or if your playing hardcore/emo/trendy shit.. please quit and sell us all your nice amps that your parents bought you at a cheaper price.
Who are your musical influences?
The Beatles, The Ramones, Screeching Weasel, The Romantics, The Queers, The Beach Boys. Good stuff.
Any bands you really want to do a show with and why?
It would be great to open up for Cheap Trick. I hear that Bun E Carlos is the most bitchin' dude EVER. Or Green Day, cuz at least that would guarantee people being at the show.
Who's the wildest band you've ever done a show with?
Leslie and the Lys.

What are your general thoughts on the world today?
We are fucked!
What's your favorite part of being in a band?
Turning up our amps loud at shows!!
Anyone you want to thank?
Chris Grassi bought us dinner last night after a show. thanks Chris!!!!
