Interview with Teenage Rehab
TEENAGE REHAB
Danny Rehab: Guitars, Vocals (DR)
Tommy Habit: Bass, Vocals (TB)
Alex Reject: Drums, No Vocals (AR)
On with the show..... 1.How did Teenage Rehab get started?
DR: A couple of guys and I wanted to play some good punk rock,
because no one else was doing it here in Paducah. Also there were
only a few good punk bands at the time.
2.Were any of you in bands prior to Teenage Rehab?
TH: The Dive Bombers, The Muck Rakers, Black Ball, ect.
AR: 2 Dollar Lunch, SubHead and The Deviants.
DR: The JackDaddy's , Dive Bombers and Oddly Enough.
3.Tell Us About your band.
ALL: We suck!
4.Style of Music (political, EmO, Funny, hardcore, rockstars, ..etc)
ALL: Straight forward punk rock.
5.Favorite place to play and why?
DR: Melody Inn in Indianapolis PRN. Great Promoters and kids!
TH: Chicago and P-town (Paducah). Mikey from Rose Red is really
cool and the local P-town scene is great!
AR: Chicago, Indy and Creepy Crawl in St. Louis. Great shows!
6.Funniest thing you've seen at a show?
AR & TH: Danny wear a Johnny Ramone wig through a whole set! haha
his dumb looking head isn't made for long hair.
DR: A band named Octalux.
7.Craziest place you've played?
TH: Tazzma's in Lafayette, IN. The place had stupid green alien posters
and the stage was elevated over the crowd by about 15 ft. They gave us
7 dollars for the 7 hr trip and the owner said "Hope this don't keep y'all
from coming back!" fuck that place!
8.Are you on a label? If so, who?
ALL: We're on Amp Records right now, but we have been shopping around
for a new label with a different direction. We have 18 songs for a new face
melting record!!!
9.Who's your favorite band right now?
DR: The Pink Lincolns.
TH: I'd have to say Middle Class Trash
AR: definately the Zero Boys from Indianapolis.
10. Who writes your songs and how are you inspired to write them?
DR & TH: We usually all write peices of songs and mold them together.
Then theres other times when we bring in completed songs. For the most
part our songs are about real life and the pressures of responsibilty that
make you loose your fuckin' mind. Some of the lyrics are inspired by A&E
specials on serial killers or movies like "Tombstone".
11.When you play at a show are you all serious or do you just fuck around?
DR: I'd say its about 50/50. We like to rock out and be taken seriously,
but we also can make fun of ourselves.
12.What's your favorite song that you play right now and why?
DR & TH: "Dead On The Couch" its fun to play and it builds confidence
at the beginning of the set!
AR: "I Don't Give A Shit" so many people don't play punk rock anymore.
I love playing this song on an emo bill and blowing everyone's fucking
ears away!
13.What does it mean to you being in Teenage Rehab?
TH: It means everything to us.
AR: Perhaps the world!
DR: ... what does it mean?
14.What do you do when you are not playing?
AR: work work work all day long.
TH: work
DR: Roof and Drink.
15.How do your families evaluate the fact that you are musicians a
nd not a banker or whatever?
AR: My wife, Shara supports this band. My family supports this band
but about once a year my grandma tells me to get a "real job" in a very
loving way!
TH: My parents hated me getting into punk rock and they still
don’t support this band.
16.If you check out TV on any given day often you see "punk"
video clips or sound bites from bands like Something Corperate,
Rise Against, AFI,Greenday, etc.. What are your thoughts on the
influences of Punk Rock on the mainstream?
TH: It makes me fuckin' nauseous.
DR: I hate all those bands. I can't even listen to my "Kerplunk" cd anymore!
AR: Sadly, I don't see much difference in mainstream music and underground
music. Most all the bands in the underground sound alike and most all of the
mainstream bands sound alike. None of them have any balls and they play
it safe always! Fuck that shit.
17.What is your current evaluation of the current punk scene?
AR: hhaha, like I was just saying...aside from a handfull of bands....most
of the punk scene.. are cookie cutter bands who loved Good Charlotte's first
album so much they started a band and made their own whiney ass love
songs, though you won't get them to admit it. The word punk is thrown
around so much, did you know Bowling for Soup is punk??!?
18.Who are your musical influences?
DR: Ramones, The Clash, Angry Samoans, Pink Lincolns, The Queers and
Moral Crux.
AR: Descendents, Metallica, Megadeth, lamb of god , Screeching Weasel
and Minor Threat.
TH: Black Flag, The Dicks, Rancid and the Zero Boys.
19.Any bands you really want to do a show with and why?
DR & TH: Nah, not really.
AR: I'd like to play with the Descendents, if they start playin' out again.
Maybe NOFX too, I really like them.
20.Who's the craziest band you've ever done a show with?
ALL: The Dockers from Indianapolis, IN. They're the funniest fuckin'band
we've ever seen. They're the novelty band that the novelty doesn't wear off
on. Its like Devo meets The Dwarves. Remember their hit song "Pussy Pawn
Shop"!!! fuck yea!
21.Descibe the stage presence of Teenage Rehab
TH: We don't play dress up at all, so when people first hear our set I
think they are kinda taken back by it. Its loud and fast with a lot of
powerful emotions!
AR: We've been playing now since 1998 and we've pretty much garnered
our own sound and built a good rep. for live shows. Danny says funny shit
on stage, while Tommy crowd baits with a "fuck you" here and a "I fucked
your mom" there. haha
22.Has your style of music changed at all since the band started? If so,why?
DR: I think we've changed because we're always writting better songs.
AR: Yeah with the song writing on "More Than A Job" when Tommy came into
the band, I can tell a big difference in the importance of different vocal
patterns and stuff like that. I learned alot from watching Danny and Tommy
work together.
23.What's your favorite part of being in a band?
ALL: The free beer, cheap drugs and pussy! hahah (sarcasm is in
effect)
24.What are personal thoughts on the mentality of today's america?
TH: America is in a fucked up place right now. It's sometimes scary.
AR: For me being a youth in America, I unfortunately feel a certain
amount of hopelessness.
DR: gas is way too fuckin' high.
25.When you look into the crowd, what would you say are the kind of
people at the shows?
TH: adults and kids who are disillusioned with the current punk scene.
DR & AR: people who are in the same boat with us, they didn't go to college
and music is their passion.
26.How did you come up with the name Teenage Rehab?
DR: The original bass player came up with the name. "Teenage Lobatomy"
mixed with "Next Stop Rehab" ..... I think. I'm not sure.
27.What makes Teenage Rehab different from other bands?
AR: I think a big part of what separates us is that we are completly
untouched by trends. We don't do anything that is pop culture like. Most
younger bands are really cocky too, we don't play that card.
28.Anyone you want to thank?
DR & TH: Nope.
AR: Thanks to Lura from Punk Rock Review! All the people coming
to the shows and buying merch. insuring that we make it home.
